Frank Zappa, in his song Packard Goose (1979, part of Joe's Garage) has this wonderful hierarchy:
- Information is
- not knowledge
- Knowledge is
- not wisdom
- Wisdom is not truth
- Truth is not beauty
- Beauty is not love
- Love is not music
- Music is THE BEST
Knowledge management geeks like to modify this (reflecting their spending too much time with computers and not enough with people) to get:
- Data
- Information
- Knowledge
- Wisdom [sometimes]
Did Zappa get his version from an earlier source?
A quote from Arthur C. Clarke (1998?):
- But it is vital to remember that information - in the sense of raw data -- is not knowledge; that knowledge is not wisdom; and that wisdom is not foresight. But information is the first essential step to all of these.
Amy Burns Short points out this, from The Rock (1934) by T. S. Eliot:
- Where is the Life we have lost in living?
- Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?
- Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?
