Since Google adding the News tab has the network-mind thinking about world news right now, let me say that reading news around the world and in other languages is one of the things I really love about the web, and something I think everyone should do to expand their horizons.
Newspapers are an easy way to start picking up other languages, because they use a restricted vocabulary, have a fairly consistent format, and because the world stories have familiar subject matter.
I’ve got a starter list of world newspapers on my wiki at
http://www.istori.com/cgi-bin/wiki?News/NewsAroundTheWorld (and some more at
http://www.istori.com/cgi-bin/wiki?News). Feel free, of course, to edit those pages, particularly to add more links.
Another cool starting point is World News Network. It’s another huge news spider, including different languages and a great selection of very vertical interests. The way to use it as a starting point is to do a search for a few keywords you find interesting (use proper names instead of English words if you’re looking for non-English articles), then follow the links to find new newspapers.
