AT&T Loading Slowly…

AT&T left voicemail on Tuesday that the service was back in my area, and that I just had to power-cycle my modem and computer to get connected. It seems it’s not actually that easy…

Indeed, the “Activity” light on the modem had started flashing, even though the “Cable” light had not come on like it should, so I tried it. And re-tried it. No go.

So, between AT&T Broadband Customer Support having busy lines and me having a life, it was not until 22:55 Wednesday night that I finally got their phone to ring. Immediately, I got a recording, “Your wait time will be at least 20 minutes.” It was 00:30 Thursday morning by the time I was connected to a human.

She had me power-cycle the modem and computer, even though I assured her I had done so in preparation for the call. In the meantime, she asked me what kind of modem I had; I answered “an RCA.” As we waited for the computer to boot, she said, “Oh, your RCA modem is incompatible with our network anyway. We’ll have to send out a technician.” I asked her if I could just buy and install my own, figuring that would be less hassle. Apparently that question wasn’t in the script; she had to go consult with her supervisor. The answer ended up being no, they’d have to send a tech.

They’re busy fixing lots of people, so the first appointment they had was in a little over two weeks, on the 21st. We’ll see what happens, I guess. In the meantime, I found the AT&T Broadband Approved Modem page; my RCA DCM205 is listed there, so either the page is old, or I got fed a line.
